Coffee tables aren’t just for coffee; they have multiple uses for your home. Chief of which is that they pull a room together, giving it a sense of completion. Coffee tables also give a sense of coziness, especially to an otherwise large living room or family room. When they are surrounded by a sofa and a chair or two, they break the room up into little seating areas. These, in turn, create a cozy and comfortable ambience.

Because they highlight, or accentuate, a room’s theme, they are sometimes known as accent tables. If a living room has a heavy country theme, coffee tables can hold baskets, bears, or other country decor items. They can also hold art pieces or knick knacks that keep with the country air. Because of this ability to highlight a room’s theme, coffee tables can complete a room’s decor.

A coffee table doesn’t have to be placed in front of a sofa; it can also be used as an end table. A room needs a considerable amount of space to have a table in front of a sofa or a couple chairs; some living rooms or family rooms may not be that big. As an end table, there’s no need for the extra space. Plus, if someone wants extra lighting, a lamp placed on an end table is very convenient.

Coffee tables come in such a wide variety of styles that it may be hard to choose just one for your living room or family room. A good rule of thumb is to match it with the rest of your room’s decor. Is your room more streamlined, where bold colors and hard lines rule? Then choose a sleek and boldly colored coffee table to complete the look.

If a room is less splashy and more muted in its color and more subtle in its lines, then a table that would blend in with that decor would be the wisest choice. You wouldn’t want to place a neon green and sharply angled coffee table in a room that is full of roundness and pastels.

Aesthetics aren’t the only job of the coffee table; they can be areas used for storage or organization. Oftentimes coffee tables aren’t very high off the ground, but they usually have at least one drawer. Some coffee tables act as mini shelving units, with shelves in the middle or along the sides. If you want a bigger storage area inside your coffee tables, consider old style trunks. In these, you can store seasonal items, such as blankets.

Because of the popularity of coffee tables, a whole book genre has been created: the coffee table book. These books are larger than the normal book because they’re pictorial in nature. While they don’t provide any in depth reading material, they are enjoyable nonetheless. This is because they are works of art, with the cover being worthy of framing. Because of this, the coffee table book is displayed prominently on many tables.

Coffee tables are also comfortable - for your feet, that is. Many people want to sink into a soft sofa or chair and prop their feet up on a coffee table after a long and hard day. Such a position is great for unwinding or watching TV. Just be careful not to knock over any of the home decor items placed on your accent table!

In many ways, coffee tables are the unsung heroes of the home decor world. They complete the look of a room by accentuating the decor. They’re also functional because they can serve as storage units or hold a much needed reading lamp. When you carefully consider the type of accent tables you want in your living room or family room, you’ll be pleased at what all this little piece of furniture can do.
