Your First Saltwater Aquarium Fish
Mollies - Of all the tropical fish one can first purchase for a saltwater aquarium, these are proving to be among the most popular. The reason for this being that this particular variety of salt water fish does not have too many problems coping with any changes in their environment in a tank. As any aquarist will tell you, initially after setting up a saltwater aquarium, it can take some time before you get the chemical composition of the water in the tank right. The great thing about Mollies are they are a very hardy fish and don’t find it too difficult if there are changes in their tank’s environment.
Most Mollies that you see in saltwater aquariums today are black in color; however they do come in a variety of other colors such as Silver, Gold and one known as a Dalmation. They make a lovely addition to any saltwater aquarium tank because they have wonderful broad tails and large back fins. It is important when buying Mollies that for every male of the species you buy two females.
Another thing that one should be aware of is that Mollies like a saltwater aquarium that contains plenty of plants and also has a well set up filtration system. These fish, if waste is allowed to accumulate in the tank and which they produce considerable amounts of, can make them ill.
Damsels - Another great species of tropical fish which are perfect to keep in a saltwater aquarium after it has only been recently set up. These particular fish are relatively inexpensive to purchase and come in a wide variety of colors. But you do need to be aware that this particular breed of saltwater aquarium fish can be very aggressive towards other species of fish which you place into your saltwater aquarium.
Ideally when buying Damsel fish to put in your saltwater aquarium, it is best if you select the breeds known as the Yellowtail or Blue Devil, as both are far less aggressive towards other species of fish. However, if you do intend to keep those species of Damsels which can act aggressively towards other species of saltwater aquarium fish then it is far better to keep them in a separate tank. This is even more important if the tank you currently have is not very large.
As well as Mollies and Damsels there are plenty of other wonderful tropical fish that one can keep in a saltwater aquarium, including Lionfish, Tangs, Clownfish and Angelfish. But what you should never forget before you go out and buy any of these is to learn everything you can about them.
